Smith revealed a dark part of his upbringing and the complicated relationship he shared with his dad in “Will” memoir. The actor wrote about a terrifying act of violence he witnessed his father carry out against his mother. For the youngster, the trauma of that moment impacted his entire life and career.
Will explained that within everything he had done since, awards and accolades, the spotlights and attention, the characters and the laughs, there had been a subtle string of apologies to his mother for own inaction.
Smith took care of his father when the latter fell ill, but as a child, he wanted to slay the abuser and avenge the poor woman. One day, he found himself pausing at the top of some stairs, wheeling his dad toward the bathroom, and thinking of shoving him down. Of course, the boy never acted upon it.
"When I was nine years old, I watched my father punch my mother in the side of the head so hard that she collapsed. I saw her spit blood. That moment in that bedroom, probably more than any other moment in my life, has defined who I am."
