The actor found a solution.

Life with a physically abusive father, suicide attempts, and expulsion from high school left an unerasable mark on Tyler Perry. However, one of the most influential American celebrities gave him a simple hack that pulled Perry out of the swamp he was stuck in.

During the Television Academy interview, Perry revealed that one day he had been watching the Oprah Winfrey show and her words inspired him to write down things happening in his life.

The actor used different characters’ names because if someone had found his journal, he didn’t want them to know about his rough patches.

“I Know I’ve Been Changed” was Tyler’s first major successful play. It focused on critical issues, including child abuse and rape, and how a strong belief in God helps overcome them. So following the words of Winfrey, Perry managed to create one of his greatest works and let out the emotions that had been pent up inside him from childhood.

"I was watching the Oprah show one day and she said that it's cathartic to write things down, so I started writing down the stuff that was happening to me… That's how my first play [I Know I've Been Changed] started, which features a character who confronts an abuser, forgives him and moves on."
