The British Prime Minister of that time, Benjamin Disraeli, died in 1861. He was the favorite PM of Queen Victoria and her best friend. But the royal protocol and Victorian traditions prohibited Her Majesty from attending his funeral. It was said that blue blood had no right to mess with politics.
If Queen Victoria had attended the funeral of Disraeli, it would have been “picking a side”. Later the ban was lifted, and nobles were free to mourn in their ways.
