The Prince’s wife was adamant.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ first child was born in June 1982, and the topic of naming the infant came up soon. The discussion lasted for a whole week. The father had two options in stock, but the couple ultimately went with the mother’s wishes.

Charles suggested the name Arthur for his oldest son in homage to King Arthur, the protagonist of medieval chivalric romances. Another counterargument claimed that Charles’ middle name was Arthur. The other option was Albert, after the royal’s father. Diana, however, turned down both variants.

"Diana, Princess of Wales, suggested a stronger name — William, in honor of William the Conqueror, who won the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066," the royal historian Andrew Morton reports in the publication Pop Sugar.
