Directors found the perfect way to call a shot.
Courteney Cox’s path to “Friends” was much more complicated than one might imagine. The actress could have lost a role in the TV series because of her decision.
Cox was originally considered to read for Rachel, but the beautiful brunette turned down this offer in favor of playing Monica. Everything would be simpler if another talented actress, Nancy McKeon from “The Facts of Life”, weren’t recruited for the same part.
As one of the sitcom creators, Martha Kauffman, noted years later, one walk-meeting with Courteney helped them reach the final decision.
“We originally offered Rachel to Courteney Cox but she said she wanted to do Monica, not Rachel. Nancy McKeon, from The Facts of Life, also read for Courteney’s part. She gave a terrific performance. Warren let Marta and David make the call. They went off for a walk and came back and said Courteney.” — Marta Kauffman
