One person’s act can change millions.
A health fanatic Cristiano Ronaldo made major business bleed. The footballer, with 550 million followers on social networks, became an inspiration for a healthy lifestyle.
The Portugal captain, who doesn’t use carbons and alcohol, went mad seeing two Coca-Cola bottles on his press conference table, even though the company sponsored Euro 2020.
He hid the drinks from the camera, raising his water bottle and saying “aqua”. The sportsman’s move made Coca-Cola’s market value fall by $4 billion. Tim Crow, who has advised the brand on football sponsorship for decades, told The Guardian:
“It’s obviously a big moment for any brand when the world’s most followed footballer on social media does something like that. Coke pays tens of millions to be a Uefa sponsor and as part of that there are contractual obligations for federations and teams, including taking part in press conferences with logos and products."
