The path to popularity was difficult.
Even though Beyonce is now the role model of thousands, there were times when the singer got humiliated in the worst way.
When the star received the Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA Awards in 2016, she stated that famous brands refused to dress Destiny's Child participants at the beginning of their careers. And the reason was their skin color and curvy shapes. Since the band couldn't afford to buy their own designer outfits, Beyonce's mother and uncle sewed all the costumes.
"Starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels didn’t really want to dress four black country curvy girls, and we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture. My mother used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams. My mother and my uncle, God rest his soul, made all of our first costumes, individually sewing hundreds of crystals and pearls, putting so much passion and love into every small detail."
